August 13th

I flew to Windhoek in two stages. First, a long intercontinental flight between Frankfurt in Germany and Johannesburg, South Africa. Both are major airports in their respective continents. In J'Burg I transferred onto a regional flight to Windhoek's Hosea Kutako Airport.

When I left Frankfurt in the evening, huge and majestic clouds were towering over the airfield.

We left Frankfurt and Europe behind at 20:45 in a big South African Airways Airbus 340, and we touched down on African soil 7:30 the next morning... It was close to 12 hours in the air, but it was quite comfortable (Actually, I'm "accustomed" to European budget airlines and I thought it was outright luxurious). Among other things, I watched a reasonably enjoyable movie called Akeela the Bee and read a big fat fantasy book to pass the time.

August 14th

I spent a few hours in Johannesburg Airport, wandering around and window shopping. I saw my first signs in Afrikaans - one of the reasons I'm so interested in this part of the world is this remarkable language that quite resembles my own (Dutch, that is). I bought a paper, a map of Namibia, and in the same shop I saw a very very cool Nelson Mandela cuddly toy (Stuffed presidents? Not sure how you call these ;-)

Here is a view on Hosea Kutako's arrivals terminal when I was leaving the plane.

Hosea Kutako is a small airport, with a dozen departures a day, mostly to the Southern Africa region; Cape Town, Johannesburg, Luanda and Lusaka. A few times a week there are flights to Frankfurt, London and Fort Lauderdale.
